Reactive Lysine
Protein is an important part of any animal feed. Soyabean meal and canola are both sources of protein that can be added to animal feed to fulfil the animal's protein requirement. During the processing of raw materials before they are mixed into animal feed, various pressure and heat treatment are used. Protein can be adversely affected by extreme conditions. But these conditions are necessary to kill off any bacteria or other unwanted microbes in the raw material. So there is a trade off between using high temperatures to ensure feed safety and using low temperatures to ensure that proteins stay available for the animal to use once consumed.
This is where reactive lysine plays a big part.
Measuring the amount of reactive lysine in the raw material gives a direct indication of how heat is affecting it. If the amount of reactive lysine is low, you know that the heat being used in the process is likely too high and should be reduced. (And reducing the processing temperature will likely save you money and time too).
